DISTINGUISHED
GUEST SPEAKER
Michael
J. Stamos, M.D.
Chief, Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery
Michael J. Stamos, M.D., is the chief of the Division of
Colon and Rectal Surgery. Stamos treats a wide range of conditions,
including rectal and colon cancers, pelvic floor disorders
and inflammatory bowel disease.
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related
death, even though it is one of the most preventable. It
may occur at any age even though more than 90 percent of
tumors develop in people age 40 and older. Stamos and his
team of colon and rectal surgeons are experts in the treatment
of colorectal cancer using minimally invasive surgery and
sphincter-preserving techniques.
Prior to joining UC Irvine Healthcare, Stamos was an associate
professor of surgery at UCLA School of Medicine and served
as chief of colon and rectal surgery at the VA Medical Center
in West Los Angeles and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. For five
consecutive years, Stamos has been named one of the Best
Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors in colon and
rectal surgery. Stamos recently completed a term on the Executive
Council of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
and is a member of the American Board of Colon and Rectal
Surgeons, and chairs the oral exam committee for that organization.
